SMALL BUSINESS FEATURE: MEG SAYRE

We love your work, but would love to know more about you. Tell us all there is to know about you and your business?

My name is Meg Sayre, I am a US-based illustrator who loves coffee, cosplaying, and collecting. I love superheroes and fantasy, but lately I have been really into making more spooky designs. I create a wide range of art, my favourites being portraiture and product design. I love utilising the format of charms and pins to add new meaning to the design, my current obsession being designing collar pins and mystery pins. I sell these pieces in my shop, (which is really just an excuse to keep making them).

⭐ What is a product you haven’t made yet but would love to sometime in the future?

I would love to make some acrylic standees, I feel like there is so much space and so many elements that would be really fun to play with. I am also very intrigued by what people can do with enamel pins, though the knowledge and funding required for that endeavour is intimidating.

⭐ If you could have a lifetime supply of any Zap! Product, which would it be and why?

Wooden charms! I adore the natural aesthetic of them, I think my art style is well suited to being displayed on wood. I also love how easy they are to craft into beautiful charms or pins.

⭐ What is the biggest curveball you have had to overcome since starting your business?

Not taking on too much too fast. Sometimes my ideas get ahead of me and I invest too much into an idea that does not always pan out. But sometimes the risks are worth taking, you know?

 What is your biggest motivation?

I love to make things based on the things I love, I love sharing the things I love with others, and I love to make people happy, and making art and selling it is a way to do all of these things at once!

What is your current favourite Netflix/tv show and what’s your go-to snack for watching?

My current Netflix obsession is anything created by Mike Flanagan! I’ve been re-watching The Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. Though I’m also very excited for the new upcoming season of Witcher. I love to have anything sweet, so you’ll probably find me curled up with a bowl of ice cream to watch a good spooky story.

 What inspires your illustrations?

I love watching movies and television and reading comics and all of these things influence my work in one way or another. I am also very inspired by the merchandise that I shop for. Sometimes I see something so beautiful and creative that I am inspired to try and step up my work to be on that level. Other times I see products that are simply uninspired and I think that I can do better. From a style point of view, I adore the works of contemporary artists like

Pernille Ørum and Brianna Garcia (along with many other artists who share their works online), as well as more historical art by figures like J. C. Leyendecker and Alphonse Mucha.

What things are most important to you when running your business?

When running my business, it’s really important to me that every customer has a positive experience when purchasing from my shop. I try to keep this in mind every step of the way, from creating the artwork, to quality-checking the products, to packaging and shipping.

If you had one superpower what would it be?

I would love to be able to teleport. It would probably have some negative impacts as I would probably never walk anywhere again and would simply annoy everyone, but it would be so convenient. Superspeed would be a nice alternative.

What would you like to achieve this year?

I have a horror/romance comic idea that has been brewing for a while and I would love to start making progress on that in the new year. Otherwise, every year my goal is to keep art and product production steady and keep growing my shop.
